Looking for Lovecraft/english readers

Messagepar Kennedjiro » 12 juin 2015, 10:17

Hi everyone !

Wherever I go, I usually ask the "scholars" I meet (mainly teachers and other knowledgeable people) about Lovecraft, if they have ever heard of him, read some of his novellas, if they enjoyed it...
Since everyone here is -more or less- of the intellectual type, not to mention the omnipresence of the geek culture in our young, twisted minds, it seemed obvious to me that I had to ask you about your litterary tastes, and more precisely, if you usually read books in English, or if you have ever read part of the work of H.P Lovecraft, even in French. The best is, needless to say, to read Lovecraft in english ! 8)

This thread may as well become a discussion about english authors your read (whatever the language), but there is one rule : George R.R. Martin does NOT count as a suitable author. Nor does E.L James.

Cthulhu Ftagh'n !

Hello hello,

I must admit I've never read any of Lovecraft's books
Could you please describe us his style, so that we all want to read it ?
As for me, the only books I read in english are Harry Potter (#socialintegration :P), a few Agatha Christie novels (And then there were none, The Clocks, Appointment with death), The Hound of the Baskervilles by Conan Doyle, and The picture of Dorian Gray by Oscar Wilde (very nice :D ).

Hi there, I'm also a big lovecraft fan, I've read a lot of his novels or short stories, I have 3 big books which assemble many of his stories. I was like 14 I think when I read them and I remember I really enjoyed them. I should probably read them again now that I don't remember them in details.
Also, I don't understand why you don't consider G R Martin as a suitable author, you may not like him but i's not the case for all of us (I really like his books for instance). So if you intend on creating a thread where we can all talk about our favourite books/authors, I don't see the point in imposing your point of view on this author. Everyone who likes his books should be able to talk about him if they want wether you like it or not... (Sorry if I sound a bit cold but I don't like it when people despise my favourite authors haha x))

Apart for that, I've never read Lovecraft in English as I already had to go through a french dictionnary to fully understand his novels in french, I don't think I have the courage to read them in English haha !
As for books I've read in english, there is Stephen King's books, Harry Potter and the The Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy, which I hope you know if you consider yourself as a proper geek ;)
There might be some other books which I forgot to mention but I have a very bad memory so I'll tell you guys if I remember anything :)

Those are great references ! :D

Concerning GRR Martin... Well, I'm just tired of everyone talking about Game of Throne, which I see like a big artificial mix of LotR and Roman politics with incestuous porn around every corner. :|

As for Howard Philips Lovecraft (1890-1937), he was an american writer -with a somewhat british style- whose writings are usually described as "cosmic horror", however that doesn't cover all of his works, which could be divided into 3 main categories :
- The Cthulhu mythos (occult forces, forsaken deities, necromancy, ancient civilisations, grimmy things living in the depths, dark pantheon, the truth is too harsh for mere humans and we'd better not try to understand reality) Ex : The Call of Cthulhu
- The Dream cycle (Lovecraft created a whole fantasy dreamworld with tons of cities, weird places, and cats who jump to the moon at night) Ex : The Dream-Quest for Unknown Kadath
- Individual horrific novellas (my favourite is The Color out of Space)

Unlike Edgar Poe, Lovecraft's works were unfortunately not translated by a famous french poet, thus I strongly recommend you read them in english, even if it means using a dictionnary (I couldn't do without one when I started). Moreover, doing so will surely enhance your english level, and you will learn a lot of new words, including some older expressions like "whilst" or "unbeknownst".

Speaking of Lovecraft, I saw the Necronomicon at "La Fnac", a big book of more than 1000 pages, I wanted to buy it but hey, 40€ o_o
Besides, the book wasn't created by Lovecraft himself.
Also, there aren't many bookshop where I can find books in English :/

I don't know, the book belongs to my father but if you look for it online I'm sure you could find cheap ones.
I've only read it in english but I heard that the puns and jokes weren't the same, because they couldn't translate them (as many of them are based on sounds or language, they had to rewrite all the puns), so the name of the caracters aren't the same and a lot of stuff aren't the same, which is why I wanted to read it in it's original language.

Of course I've heard of H2G2, espacially (AHAHAH) because of all the lore around 42. But I haven't read yet. :)

I mostly read Lovecraft's novellas on iBooks, since I found a huge compilation of his works for only 0.89€. Plus, it features an integrated virtual dictionnary, which was really helpful.

Well 42 being known as the answer to life the universe and everything among us geeks comes from h2g2 only.
I don't think the mathematical olympiad ever said 42 was the answer to everything (otherwise I'd answer 42 at every single questions of every single math test and always get a 20 haha xD)

Moreover, there is a small bookshop, close to Fermat, in the Rue Lakanal. I don't really know if they got the books you're looking for, or if it is for youger readers, but you could definitely have a try there too.

You have the chance to have a lot of bookshops around Fermat, there is like, 4 or 5 of them at less than 200 meters from there.

Hi !

I have never read one of Lovecraft's book, but I got the whole holliday to fill this gap !
I quite enjoy poetry, such as Wilde (The Picture of Dorian Gray is a very good novel, by the way !) : The Artist or The Disciple are very good ones, Keats or Bukowski (he had written a wonderful poem called "Bluebird" : http://allpoetry.com/poem/8509539-Blueb ... s-Bukowski ) and I also like to read a good old Shakespeare sometimes (well, actually, most of my books are billingual editions or translated in current english -I'm not so crazy  -)

(One thing you have to know about me : for me, Shakespeare is a kind of hero, or master, or genius... Or even all of this ! Is there someone else who is keen on Wiwi here ?)

Hey !
This topic is very interesting ! So much great autors ! I'm a huge fan of Lovecraft ! (but I read his novels in french ^^)
I love Oscar Wilde too, I read "The picture of Dorian Gray in Year 8 (=classe de 5ème), and I enjoyed it so much that I achieved a 20/20 for my work ! But I didn't care about my mark...I was so disappointed that nobody in class (except my professor) enjoyed the novel as I did :') ! (For those who didn't see the film based after the novel, go and eat it as it would be the last cookie ever on the earth ! It's amazing and bluffing ! But the version of 1945 of course ;))
Then, I didn't read a lot of english books except Harry Potter (Yes, me too ^^) and the Host (vf: Les Âmes vagabondes) and...the collected novel of the Brontë Sisters ! Yes I fell in love with Charlotte Brontë's work ! Do you know Jane Eyre ? Well, it's just...so great ! ;)
Oh ! And I never read H2G2 but...I saw the film (I love you Martin Freeman you are awesome ;) Am I forgiven ?

The Brontë sisters are sooo great!
I read Jane Eyre a few years ago (if I'm not wrong it was in Year 8 = 5ème ;) ) and even though it was in french, I fell in love with this book too!
(Thanks to my french teacher from back then who told me to read it, if it wasn't for her, I would've never known such masterpiece)

Aww more Lovecraft lovers, well one actualy but still, welcome you :D
And you'll be staying at the boarding school too, how awesome is that ? :3
When I was visiting Toulouse I noticed a small shop that only sells books in english. And it's not far from Fermat so if you haven't read many books in English, this year's the right time to catch up on everything you've missed by reading in French
(Because everybody knows that english is so much better :P )

Oooh you're talking about the Bookshop, Arielle ? (in Lakanal street ?) it's pretty great indeed, but fu**ing expensiv ! :( There is also Ombre Blanche in Mirepoix street, which sells books in many languages. But Amazone remains my best friend !

Yep I'm talking about that one ! I don't know, I don't find it expensive, I bought three big novels (Lovecraft hehe) for 16€ each, it's the usual price for books like this...
I only bought 3 books after all so maybe some others are really expensive, I didn't check 'cause the price wasn't writen, I had to ask the guy about it, but since at La Fnac some books are cost 20€ while there's only 300 pages, 16€ for a 800 pages book didn't seem that expensive to me back then :?

Given the shipment fees and the lack of competition concerning foreign litterature, it's only natural.

Yes, but ink and paper doesn't cost so much ... (or does it ?)

Where does the money go ? Who has the control over prices ? who's interest is it to create and maintain all this confusion ? Surely, this is job for Sherlock Holmes.

(But I can reveal to you my little theory - for free ! But shhhht, it has to remain secret... - I think all this has something to do with the existence of the Flying Spaghetti Monster : the money earned with book sales is used to fill treasure boxes, which are then hidden on island and aimed at being found by pirates. The goal of all this is to build a positive image of pirates, who are known to be very effective against global warming...)

Lovecraft managed to live eternally by switching bodies with younger people (exactly like his character Ephraim Waite), and he's currently in control of most of the world's libraries. Also, he owns Apple, KFC, and Haribo. :|
